CHAPTER EIGHT

Cora looked around their house; even with everything still in shambles, she smiled. With no need to hide her magic any more she waved a hand and watched as everything went back into the proper places. She gave a sigh of relief and then her look saddened as she saw an empty spot where her violin used to hide.

"Don't mourn over it too long, we'll have another one crafted for you." Alaster's gentle voice came from behind her.

She couldn't help but wonder what he meant by 'we'. Certainly he didn't think they were together. "I can order one myself. I should have a little bit of money stashed somewhere from my jobs. If not, then I can earn enough for a new violin with a couple rich clients who are easy to please when it comes to magic."

"You're not a magic whore anymore."

Cora spun around, anger coursing through her.

Alaster paled. "That's not what I-"

"Yes it is, you think that's why I performed magic? So I could be a whore and earn money? There were plenty of other ways to earn money in the city. I performed magic because I needed to, because I felt like it was taking my body, my life." She yelled in his face. "If you think that I was simply whoring myself out for the money, then march your ass out of my home."

His mouth opened and closed a couple times as he struggled to find the right words. "I'm sorry." He finally sputtered out.

She closed her eyes. "Right. Again, don't worry about the violin, I'll get another one crafted." She took her cloak off and hung it near the fireplace. Imagining a fire burning in the fireplace, she closed her eyes and held her hand out. Within seconds the flames started to dance up between the logs that had been left there.

Alaster stepped up next to her, "That's amazing, really, who would have thought that you would have such control after first coming into your powers."

"I'm just lucky I guess, from what I hear it's in the blood line. Hopefully the control will increase with time." She looked around. "Everything is in order. I'm assuming that you found a place to stay, as well as places for the others?"

He nodded. "I'm just a few doors down from you and the others are scattered around the city."

"Good, I'll be going out tonight as the Gypsy Lady, just to walk the shores. Do not follow me or you'll tip people off as to what is going on."

"I don't like the thought of you alone out there."

She laughed. "You didn't listen very well when my father told you that I've managed to live on my own out here before. I can avoid the guards, charm the city, and maybe make some money doing parlor tricks. I'm safer here than I am in the forest, or in the caverns."

"As you wish, but if there is any trouble, I want to know about it. Please." He met her eyes and took her hands.
